Fluorite mine that remained active from 1947 to 1977.

The Carolina mine is located in the middle of the Asturian Central Mountain, in the western foothills of the Sierra del Aramo, in the council of Quirós, although bordering on the limit of Proaza. The work can be seen on the western slope of the Coscorval peak from the Aciera pass, which can be climbed both from the Quirosan village of the same name and from that of Villamejin, in Proaza.

The concession began to be exploited in 1947 in a rudimentary way. The ore was transported by car to the town of Villamejin, from where it was transferred to the Trubia Weapons Factory, which it supplied as a flux. For its exploitation, a small cut of about 40 meters in length was made, from which several transversal ones went towards the concentration of ore, exploiting it through the system of chambers and pillars. In 1961, the conception began its most intense period of operation with its lease by Minersa, although this stage only lasted for a period of 2 years, and subsequently, in 1972, the Villabona mines took over the concession focusing almost exclusively on the use of the tailings and the performance of some reconnaissance and survey work. These works finally encourage the opening of a new transversal, at a lower level, in order to cut a new reef, and also use it for extracting the ore from the higher works. However, once cut, the new vein does not meet expectations, which is why, in 1977, the operation definitively closed.

In spite of being the most important fluorite mine in Asturias, outside of the three major sectors of the Collada, Caravia - Berbes and Villabona - Arlos, until 2017, had not been seen collection copies of this exploitation. It is to be assumed that the lack of references itself, together with the difficulty of access and the scarcity of mineralization, has greatly influenced the absence of seekers and collectors in La Carolina for a long period of time. Even today the fluorite specimens of the mine that can be considered of reasonable or good quality are very few.
