Rio Maggiore, a left tributary of River Reno, is an 8-km-long stream and its drainage basin covers 16.4 km². This stream, whose confluence point is located in front of the Porretta Terme railway station, marks most of the border between the former municipalities of Porretta Terme and Granaglione.
Various sandstone outcrops occur along the valley. Rock clefts of the Arenarie di Suviana (Porretta Sandstone) formation in this area are some top localities for the Porretta quartz crystals, which typically develop skeletal growth forms and show inclusions of light yellow-grey clay. Such crystals frequently also contain water and gaseous hydrocarbon inclusions. These crystals have smooth and lustrous, in part curved faces and very often they form aggregates of two or more crystals.
