John Gould Island
Cabbage Tree Island, named after the distinctive cabbage tree palms (Livistona australis) found on the island.
The island is located 1.4 kilometres offshore from Port Stephens and covers an area of 26.3 hectares. The island measures is approximately 1 km in length and around 123 metres above sea level.
In 1954 Cabbage Tree Island was gazetted as the John Gould Faunal Reserve with the specific aim of protecting breeding sites of the endangered Gould’s Petrel (Pterodroma leucoptera leucoptera).
