Historic gold mine.

The Duchess Gold Mining Company was formed in 1873, and during the first six months the mine was worked by the company on its own accord, then for the rest of its life under tribute. During its first three years 8483 tonnes of quartz was crushed yielding 3292 ounces of gold. The company dispensed with the services of a mine manager to oversee the tributers, instead relying on the judgement of the tributers themselves, which the company claimed was a successful process.

William Porter was charged with assaulting a Duchess Company contractor in 1881. Porter was living on the company's land, and had constructed a fence around his house. The company proceeded to dismantle the fence which Porter took exception to.

Like many of the mines in the area, gold yields were low, apart from the occasional rich patch of nuggets. Several different parties of tributers came and went during the mine's short history. The shaft site is under a shopping centre car park.
