Historic gold mine.

There are three shafts east of Victoria Park in the vicinity of Queen Victoria Street, and Salisbury Avenue, now occupied by housing.

The company was formed in 1856, with three shafts on reef wash with no defined gutter. Two of the three shafts reached 76.5 and 75 metres deep. The company struggled for eleven years only reaching the wash in 1867, which was said to be very extensive at 100-245 metres wide, with an average thickness of 0.8 metres thick. This was worked out by 1869, and the company closed shortly after. Between 1867 to 1869 the company produced 36 226 ounces of gold.

E.W. Spain was mine manager. He replaced George Simpson, who had been charged with murder. August 1867, William Thompson arrived for work drunk. Simpson refused to allow him down the shaft, and Thompson made verbal threats to the mine manager, who then whacked him across the head with a theodolite. Thompson was rendered even more insensible, and died shortly after.

A pumping engine was installed in 1866 formerly owned by the National Company at Daylesford. More pumping equipment had to be installed in 1868, to contend with the copious water being produced through the wash dirt. The No. 2 shaft was abandoned at this time.

In 1867, members of the company landed on the doorstep of the Victorian Governor un-announced, to plead for land given to Gavin Graham. A gaggle of press was in tow. The Governor queried why the request had not been placed in writing, refused to meet them at short notice, and told them to go away.

Elements of the Ballarat community criticised the mine for working on Sundays, when everyone should be at church praying for redemption. Spain argued work on Sundays only occurred with volunteers, and was necessary to enact repairs on the mine, to allow full production during the week. At least one miner complained he was sacked for refusing to work on a Sunday.
