The Great Extended Company Redan was formed in 1856, with the first shaft sunk the following year. The company had to contend with much water and three years later the shaft was only down to 114 feet. When it did reach the Golden Point gutter, rich gold patches were found, producing 110 111 ounces, the fourth highest alluvial figure for the Ballarat goldfield. Many large nuggets were found, the largest 49.38 ounces. The washdirt was 60 metres wide by 2 metres thick.

The company was involved with much litigation with adjacent mining companies between 1861-1864. Later production was from cemented reef wash, 9-45 metres wide, and 2 metres thick. By 1866, the gold producing areas had been worked out, and in 1866 a second shaft was sunk but the wash found was poor in gold.

Mid 1866 a shareholder meeting was held critical of the company shortly before indicating five years of rich gold was ahead, but now only eighteen months was being said. Directors had sold their shares on the back of the previous announcement, and accusations of insider trading were made. Shareholders stated dividends owed had not been received, the legal manager stating he had no time to write out cheques. The company name changed to the Great Redan Extended Gold Mining Company.

In 1868, with mounting liabilities, a lack of gold, little shareholder support, and a lack of capital, the company was wound up.

The original shaft is paved over by Talbot Street, between Darling and Bell streets, while the second shaft is at Ferguson Court.
