Historic gold mine.

Information about this mine was found from 1895, when it is called briefly the New Find, or Fortuna, however the latter quickly gained prominence.

61 acres. In 1895, the property was on offer to an English syndicate who wanted to mine the entire hill as a huge quarry. 750 tonnes of dirt was tested from various points. This proved extremely low grade, and gold is generally found in the Thames area in pockets. The syndicate abandoned the idea.

In 1896 a trial crushing of 2 tonnes of ore returned 26 ounces of gold. Henry Rabe is the mine manager and owner. A small battery is erected.

The Miners Union in 1900 complained to the warden over what it saw as excessive protection of the mine, when it felt the mine should be worked by tributers. The warden gave a further six months protection, but after this the lease was sold. In 1907 the New Dart Gold Mining Company controls the lease. The New Dawn Gold Mining Company takes over in 1908 but both continue to apply for protection from the warden. In 1909, the Bendigo Gold Mining Company purchases the battery.

The neighbouring Fortuna No. 2 Company was formed April 1896, the lease sold, and company wound up in October the same year.

The Fortuna Mine has produced a total of 30 tonnes of ore for 40 ounces of gold, and a further 87 tonnes of ore by tributers for 32 ounces of gold. The mine was found near Hape Stream. The Mindat co-ordinates are approximate.
