Murphy's Hill is about 15 kilometres south-east by road of Whangapoua, 200 metres east of the Te Rerenga-Kauotunu Road, and just south-east of the Whangapoua Harbour. The hill is named after the original prospector who discovered gold here P. Murphy in 1861. He registered the claim on the southern side of the hill, and it was worked successfully for a short time.
Little gold appeared to exist outside the prospectors claim. Trenches, and several adits are noted at the time in vughy near surface flinty quartz, much manganese oxide stained. In 1864, Murphy abandoned his interest in the lease when the other shareholders refused to provide more money to develop the mine.
Prospectors obtained a further 40 tonnes of ore for 38.5 ounces of gold in 1894.
Little if anything appears to remain of the workings.
