The Great Mercury Mine was originally part of the prospector's claim, gold discovered here by Alexander Peebles in 1889. The mine is located on Bald Hill, two kilometres south of Kuaotunu. The lease covered 28 acres.

The mine was on the Try Fluke Lode, the rich auriferous vein within this 4-5 feet wide. A ten stamp battery with cyanide plant was erected at the mine in 1892. Over 300 ounces per month was being produced. In 1891, it was the second largest producer on the goldfield after the Try Fluke Mine.

Originally with Sydney owners, the mine was purchased by English investors in 1895. It soon entered periods of inactivity, as the upper rich gold levels became exhausted, with poor ore grades at depth.

In 1900 the mine was purchased by J.J. Craig and J.A. Thompson, and let to tributers.
