Historic gold mine. The lease was part of the original gold discovery in 1889 by Alexander Peebles, who was subsequently the mine manager.

The mine is located on Bald Hill, two kilometres south of Kuaotunu, bordered by the Great Mercury, Mariposa, and John Bull leases, all on the Try Fluke lode. It was a star that shone brightly at first, but it was not to last long.

The thirty strong Red Mercury syndicate decided to form a company, and the
Red Mercury Gold Mining Company was floated in 1890, with a trial crushing the same year. The company had sixty shareholders.

In 1891, the mine produced 1134 tonnes of ore, yielding 1686 ounces of gold, the third highest for the goldfield for the year after the Try Fluke and Great Mercury mines.

Despite this, income from gold production did not meet the expenses of establishing the mine, and in 1894 the liquidator stepped in. The mine was sold to James Frater, although another source states the purchase was financed by six un-named members of the Auckland stock exchange, it is assumed local businessmen. The ten stamp battery went to D and G Price, residence and office to D. McLeod, stone breaker and machinery to J.J. Craig.

Shortly after the mine was sold to the Venus Gold Mining Company, and then taken over by the Try Fluke Mine.
