The "quarrymen island".
An island formed by the youngest granite of the pluton of pink granite of Ploumanac'h. The granite is finer grained, and some varieties take a blue shine when polished. There were a lot of granite quarries on and around the island, with up to 200 workers. Even if it was exploited since the Middle-Age it's really from 1850 that reefs and small islands in the archipelago were rented to operators for successive periods of 6 to 9 years. Quarrymen came from everywhere, particularly from the Chausey islands and Cotentin peninsula. Between the 1860s and 1910s, the population increased. Fifty years during which the extraction of granite, up to 800 tonnes per day, will be at its peak at Ile-Grande. For cobblestones, kerbs, harbour walls and more, the Ile-Grande granite was exported to the Channel and Atlantic coasts.
All these quarries are now abandoned.
