Historic coal mines from the 1860's on the western outskirts of Dunedin in the Saddle Hill, Fairfield and Abbotsford areas. Modern aggregate and sand quarries remain. Some pottery clay was also mined historically.

Generally the material was seams 6-14 feet thick of inferior grade brown coal, overlain with clays, sand, Fe conglomerate, and minor coal seams with unaltered wood.
