Gold was found on the flats of the valley, one mile below the Cardrona town site in the late 1860's. The two major leases in this area were the Empire, and Banner of War. Minor disjointed information was found.
In 1874, it is stated the syndicate consists of seven shareholders, all working at the mine. During this period Timothy Cottar or Cotter had applied for an agricultural lease over the area, and there was a dispute over compensation between the mines (Empire, Banner of War, Great Extended) on the lease, and Cotter, which prevented the mines expanding their workings. Mining could not be conducted on agricultural land, and disagreements were arising in the 1870's between farmers and miners in the area.
Only shallow work had been conducted at the lease, via an incline with ore drawn up by a horse. Mine manager was G. Yeldham. One source states the lease was also known as Bond's Claim, and indicating mining started in 1871, although old timer George Hassing states gold was discovered in this area in the late 1860's.
Any sign of mining in the area has been completely obliterated by farming. Co-ordinates very approximate.
