Abandoned scheelite mine.
The mine is near the summit of the 2300 metre Mount Larkins. The mine could only be worked a few months of the year, being snow bound most of the time.
Hood, Birley and Saunders (surnames) discovered a scheelite lode here in 1909. The place was so inaccessible, ore was carted down the mountain side on the backs of men, to a point where it was loaded on a wire rope to be traversed across a rocky gully, then carted to the Glenorchy Scheelite battery at the bottom of the range. Such an arrangement could not last, although information was found they were at the site until at least 1915.
John Thornton took out a lease in the area in 1937, and is still there the following year but no more information was found.
Co-ordinates are the geographic Mount Larkins, as the amount of snow covering the area made it impossible to accurately locate the mine.
