Alluvial gold in gravels.
The Blue Jacket Terrace is about two kilometres north of where Skippers Road enters the gorge, directly north of the Devils Elbow, and on the western side of the Shotover River. The beach opposite is where the rafting tours start on their way down the river to Arthurs Point. Much of the terrace has been sluiced away.
Names found for claims on the terrace were J.W. Lavles (Lawles?) and W.E. Robertson (1891); G.B. Paterson (1926), A.C. Hanlon (1926), while William M. Elliot and Robert Gilkison Jnr were ordered by the courts to sell their claim, water races, tail races, and dam in 1930.
From 1887, and into the 1890's Joseph Durie, and W. Robertson was hydro sluicing the terrace as the Blue Jacket Company. On the evening of the 27 January 1896, they heard coeeing on the hillside on the range opposite. Getting a light they followed the sound, only to hear a screech. They could find no-one and returned to their hut. The next morning they found the body of Lee Chong. He was a merchant in Queenstown, who was travelling to the goldfield to collect money from customers. He appears to have become lost, and fell down a cliff while trying to reach Robertson.
