Alluvial gold in gravels.

Yates Terrace is a small area perched above the south bank of Stoney Creek, 3 kilometres upstream from its confluence with the Shotover River. A water siphon crosses high above the creek at the terrace, probably built by the Davis family, or J. Williams in 1884.

A walk extends south of the Skippers town site, across the Pleasant Terrace to Stoney Creek. DOC states an un-marked, and un-maintained track continues up the creek, which appears to be very rugged.

March 1878, the brothers James, Michael, and William Egan, with James Fitzgerald are working an underground mine near the terrace. They are replacing timbers underground, when the roof collapses. William Egan loses his life in the accident, while James Fitzgerald is seriously hurt.

The creek was a focus for alluvial miners in the 1863 gold rush, and for Chinese miners in the 1870's, with much gold said to have been obtained.

From the mid 1880's, the Davis brothers took over, and worked the terrace in conjunction with their claims at the Stoney Terrace, at the mouth of the creek, and Racecourse Terrace to the south. When the Paterson brothers took over the Davis claims in 1909, the Yates Terrace was included. The Patersons are noted at Yates as late as 1921.
