Alluvial gold in gravel.
Skippers Point is a tiny 6 acre terrace, just north of the Skippers town site, but was incredibly rich in gold, estimated and claimed at 100 000 ounces extracted.
Early alluvial miners included the Finney brothers, Welshmens party, old Abraham and several others. The whole of the gravel contained gold, with certain particularly rich layers, down to a depth of 150 feet.
Eventually the whole of the terrace came under John Aspinall's control, a hard headed businessman come miner. He died in 1890 at his home in Skippers Point aged 51, which only proves money is not everything if you are not around to enjoy it.
Aspinall needed an area to build a reservoir, and realised a claim had been cancelled without the former owner's knowledge, so applied for it. Two years previously Smith and Poulter (surnames) applied for a lease once worked by Finney and party, then almost immediately sold it again before the paperwork had arrived, to A. Sorenson. A power of attorney had been left with the gold assayer in Queenstown, but when he could not contact Smith and Poulter he recommended the lease be cancelled. This was done without Sorenson's knowledge, and he continued to pay rent every six months to the gold assayer none the wiser for a two year period. When Aspinall lodged a request for the claim it went to the Warden's Court, which ruled in Sorenson's favour.
