It is assumed gold here was discovered by a party of Italian miners, as the mine is most likely named after Guiseppe Garibaldi, general, politician, and nationalist, credited with the unification of Italy.
A tunnel was dug in 1878 but little gold was found. In 1880, the Garibaldi Gold Mining Company was registered to re-open the mine. Some good ore was found, but it had to be sledged down the mountain side. The mine was sold by the bailiff in 1887. Farrells Consolidated tried to buy the mine, but when this fell through, the mine was re-opened by New Zealand Consolidated Mines Limited, a company on a gold mine buying spree at the time. The United Goldfields Mining Company operated the mine from 1909 to 1919, their battery on Sylvia Creek, 200 metres below the All Nations battery site.
The United Goldfields battery was constructed from parts of other batteries, and was erected in 1910 to re-work the All Nations and Garibaldi mines. The site shows the stamps, timber framing, on concrete foundations, but is in a poor condition. Co-ordinates show the battery site.
