Johnstones Creek is an ephemeral east-west stream entering Falls Dam, east of St. Bathans.
In 1896, Jim Kennedy, the son of St. Bathans police constable James Kennedy, discovered alluvial gold in quartz gravel wash, on a spur of the Hawksdun Range near Johnstones Creek.
Sixty claims were soon pegged, one hundred miners on the field, and McConnochie had constructed a water race, so the ground could be sluiced. Several parties sank shallow shafts, but apart from Kennedy's claim, who had sunk two shallow shafts, no-one found any gold.
The outcome was Kennedy worked the ground for about a year finding payable gold, but the auriferous area was small, not extending outside his 6 acres claim. The warden subsequently stated Kennedy was obtaining 50 ounces per 6 week period, from an auriferous gravel layer only 6 to 8 inches thick.
The exact location is uncertain, and the co-ordinates denote Johnstones Creek only.
