Middleburg Township


Brook Park is a city in Cuyahoga County and a suburb of Cleveland.

The area that would become Brook Park was originally part of Middleburg Township in the early 1800s and mainly agricultural. In 1836, several villagers in the southwestern part of Middleburg Township decided to form a new village, which would became Berea. Berea and the area that is now known as Brook Park prospered from its educational facilities and the sandstone quarries in the area (Weber, 1925, p. 25).

In 1907, a vote was put to the other residents of Middleburg Township to decide if they wanted to incorporate the rest of Middleburg Township as a village, but the voters rejected the motion. In 1914, the voters in the northern part of the Middleburg Township, officially broke away and the village of Brook Park is incorporated. The remaining southeast portion of the township became Middleburg Heights. In the 1920's the City of Cleveland chose Brook Park as the potential spot for an airport. Brook Park was close to two major New York Central Railroad lines and close to a Baltimore & Ohio Railroad line and the new airport was able to capitalize this.

With the airport and railroad lines for transportation access, the Cleveland Tank Company and later the Ford Motor Company built plants to take advantage of the easy access to transportation. In 1940s, the National Advisory Committee (NACA, which would eventually become the National Aeronautics and Space Adminstration [NASA]) built what is today the John H. Glenn Research Center at Lewis Field. Brook Park grew from a population of 2,600 to nearly 13,000 people during the 1950s and became a city in 1950 (Segall, 2014).
