Old coal mine.

The Snowdon coal mine is part of the very scenic Rakaia Gorge, 35 kilometres west of Coalgate. A walking track follows the gorge, with a short side-track to the mine site with three gated tunnels, and some mining relics.

The mine was developed by George Gerard in the late 19th century for local coal use. Gerard was the pastoralist who owned the 16 800 hectare Snowdon property the mine was sited on. All mining ceased by 1904. The mine was developed on two levels, with the tunnels reaching 30 metres into the hill on a coal seam 3 metres thick.

Jet boat rides can be taken along the river, and there is a golf course resort nearby.
