Tallebung Northern Lead
A former underground mine with small open cut and shallow pits with dredging and sluicing. Workings extended for approximately 350 metres along an east-northeasterly trending channel.
Original workings destroyed by large scale open cut mining 1963-1970. A visit to the site in 2026 revealed a large long water filled abandoned open pit from this time.
Observations by geologists before 1963 state that this is an alluvial placer or wash location, where cassiterite is found underground in ancient stream channels. Historically two shafts in the southern section and the rest relatively minor workings. Minor faulting and folding is associated with the quartz veins, and prominent dark brown to black limonite was seen at the base of a small open cut. The shafts exploited small quartz veins dipping east 30-35 degrees. The other workings it is assumed access mineralisation in the wash likely to be quartz boulders, slate and clay containing cassiterite. Wolframite blades and plates 1-2 inches across have been found on a pile of tailings next to the open cut.
