North Shango shaft


A former underground mine with shafts, shallow pits and opencut.
The mine operated 1902 to 1911.
This deposit includes the North Shango Shaft.

The Shango mine started with the Knight Brothers in 1901 with a shaft to 60 feet called the Duke of Cornwall. Only trace copper was found. An un-named company then dug an open cut with 13 tons of ore produced proving uneconomic. The lode at the surface was 5.5 feet wide, dipping south and other times reported dipping east.

A Cobar group called the Shango Copper Mining Syndicate took over in late 1906 to 1908. W. Morton was mine manager. They ignored the water filled open pit and old shaft and sank a new shaft. The host rock was blue slate, ironstone gossan, quartz and sandstone with stringer copper mineralisation and staining, likely malachite. Development was reported by them until early 1908. In January 1908 they reported Pb carbonates, likely cerussite. The shaft had reached a depth of approximately 150 feet.

In May 1908 mining had stopped pending a syndicate reconstruction to obtain more capital.

The North Shango shaft was said to be close to the Shango Shaft and in 1907 was operated by a separate company. The North Shango Copper Mining Company NL was formed 23 January 1907. They immediately set about sinking a shaft, and this continued through the year. The host rock was slates and sediments, with quartz veins forming lenses with much chlorite, and some secondary copper mineralisation without elaborating. By June 1907 the shaft was down to 63 feet in brown ironstone and quartz. In November 1907 the mine was on six months exemption.

The Canbelego Copper Mines Ltd operated the mine in 1909-1911.

One shaft can be clearly seen, still in a relatively sound condition, 400 metres off the road in scrub with no access track.
