Other/historical names associated with this locality:
Medusa Portland Cement Co. "South" Quarry; Sandusky Cement Co. Quarry; France Stone Co. "West" Quarry
The Hanson Aggregates Midwest, Inc. “West” Quarry is part of an active quarry located in E½, sec. 18. According to Carlson (1991, 2015), the rocks exposed in the quarry belong to the Devonian Detroit River Group and the Dundee Formation. It is currently operated by Hanson Aggregates Midwest, Inc., formerly by both the France Stone Company and the Medusa Cement Company.
The quarry first opened in the 1920's by the Sandusky Cement Company and was later acquired by the Medusa Cement Company in the 1950's. This would be then be called the Medusa “South” Quarry” .
In the late 1950's, the France Stone Company completed a pass underneath the Centennial Road and opened the France Stone Company “West” Quarry, to quarry out the Dundee Limestone. This quarry, was actually a geologic window of Dundee Limestone surrounded by Anderson Limestone. The new France Stone Co. “West” Quarry” and the older Medusa “South” Quarry were only separated by a “wall” of the Anderson Limestone. In the mid-1970's, Kesling and Chilman (1975) labeled this locality as the “Medusa South Quarry” (NW¼), the “Medusa South-South Quarry” (SW¼) and the “France Stone West Quarry” (Kesling and Chilman, 1975, Kesling, 1978). When the Medusa Cement Company started quarrying their “North” Quarry, in section 7, north of Brint Road, they slowly abandoned their operation in their “South” Quarry, as they were trying to avoid further quarrying into the Silica Formation.
Eventually, the France Stone Company completely acquired the Medusa Cement Company in the late 1970's - early 1980's. In the mid-1990's, Hanson Aggregates acquired the France Stone Company and now the “wall” between the two quarries is gone.
Although the names are extremely similar and very close to each other, this quarry should not be confused with the France Stone Company “East Quarry” in section 17 and the France Stone Company “North Quarry” in section 7.
