Named after the original prospector, Pat Maloney. A 1935 photograph of his camp shows a canvas tent, some drums, and minor prospecting equipment. By June 1939, the site had only recorded 14 tonnes of ore for one ounce of gold. Apart from one high value small patch, little had been found despite a thorough search.

The search ceased during the World War Two years, but recommenced in 1947. Explored in 1949 with no result, and by Dan King in 1950, who took out 1488.48 tonnes of ore averaging 19.3 dwt. The lode was worked by two shafts at a depth of 85 and 170 feet, with levels at 85, 110, 135 feet.

The mine is on the northern limb of an east plunging anticline. Country rock is sandstone, mudstone, siltstone and hematite shale folded and sheared. The lease contains several outcropping quartz-hematite lenses. Mining was conducted on the partly replaced crush zone on the south side of the western most outcrop.

The main ore shoot is between the 85 and 135 feet level, consisting of red mudstone, sericitized and impregnated with quartz-hematite stringers. Gold is found as grains, flakes, and scales on fracture surfaces, sometimes visible, and more widely disseminated in surrounding rock. Overall the gold values are patchy but some areas are very high.


The mine is on the line of lode between the rich Enterprise and Eldorado mines, 4 kilometres south of Tennant Creek, and 1.5 kilometres east of the Stuart Highway.
