North Berwick is a seaside town and former royal burgh in East Lothian, Scotland, UK.

The rocks are early Carboniferous (Dinantian) in age. During the Dinantian, most of what is now the Lothians was a low coastal plain dotted with lagoons. Substantial volcanism took place in the area. Around North Berwick, the succession is first ash fall, giving mainly red but also green tuffs, followed by eruptions producing four separate lava flows, each with a distinctive lithology and punctuated by thin beds of further ash falls.

As a practical system, local names were given to the various basalts by early geologists. Dunsapie, with labradorite, augite, and olivine, is named after the crag and lochan on Arthur’s Seat, Edinburgh. Markle, a dark grey/purple olivine basalt, is named after the castle at East Linton.
