Many of the major buildings in Kalgoorlie-Boulder were made of stone from this quarry, the most prominent the clock tower in Hannan Street. The stone was also used in thirteen local hotels including the Palace, three local schools, the courthouse, two churches, and the Boulder United Friendly Societies Hall, amongst others.
The quarry is 9 kilometres south of Boulder, and first appears in the mid 1890's. At the quarry, the rocks are an extremely weathered clay-rich saprock, and mottled saprolite, derived from tuff and other volcano-sedimentary rocks. Colours range from white to cream, yellow, red, mauve with liesegang banding common. Some unused blocks remain at the quarry.
The rock is easy to carve into blocks, and hardens on exposure to air. Two varieties are described: (1) quartz-sericite-clay derived from tuff, tuffaceous sedimentary rocks or quartz phyric rocks with xenoliths containing quartz, hematite, limonite and sericite (2) cream to yellow clay rich, pebbly volcanogenic sedimentary rock or tuff, with shale and volcanic fragments, quartz grains in a foliated clay rich matrix.
