Mine de l'Argentella, Calenzana, arrondissement de Calvi, Haute-Corse, Corse, France
An ancient silver-lead mine, located near Calvi.
The property was extensively developed from 1873, but in only a few years it became evident that the infrastructures far exceeded the needs of the deposit.
The ore processing plant and various other facilities are readily visible from road D81B. A dam, built to supply the mine, is located a few hundred meters uphill. The actual mining site is further up, situated on the southward slope of a small mountainous ridge.
Access to the base of the ridge is provided by a straight trail, following the path of the aerial line previously used to transport ore downhill. From there, the trail gradually becomes overgrown with vegetation, and the ascent becomes more challenging. Numerous closed gallery entrances and abandoned buildings are visible along the slope. At the top of the exploitation lies the "Great Trench", seemingly the result of the excavation of the main vein of the deposit. It is fenced-off and surrounded by extensive dumps.
