The Calhan Paint Mines is an archeological district with exposures of gypsum and clay with iron oxides. The area was apparently occupied by indigenous people as long as 9,000 years ago, who mined the clay for pottery paint and other uses. There is a 750-acre interpretative park with 4 miles of trails. The area is listed on the U.S. National Historic Register.
