A former Zn-Pb-Ag-Au occurrence/mine located in sec. 4, T15N, R14E, and in sec. 32, T16N, R14E, SBM, 0.2 km (0.1 mile) NNW of Kokoweef Peak, about 5 miles SW of Mountain Pass. Owned by Crystal Cave Mining Co. of Los Angeles, CA. (NOTE: Also stated to be located in sec. 32, T15½N, R14E and sec. 4, T15N, R14E, SBM). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 10 meters.
Mineralization is a vein deposit hosted in dolomite and limestone. The ore body strikes N and dips 60W at a thickness of 3.66 meters and a depth-to-top of 18.29 meters and a length of 36.58 meters. The ore body occurs along a fracture of fractures with varied thickness of 10 to 12 feet. Surface showings are limited to a few small stringetrs. The S end of the ore body is irregular and its relationship to berdding is obscure. The ore wedges out laterally. At the base the ore is cut off abruptly by a thrust fault. The faulting is post-mineralization. There is a good probably of finding more ore beneath the fault zone. Sphalerite is oxidized near surface to hydrozincite and smithsonite. Local rocks include Carboniferous marine rocks, unit 2 (SE California Carbonate Assemblage).
Local geologic structures include a thrust fault with a component of displacement which is 80-120 feet, and that lies parallel to the dip of thrust.
Workings include underground openings comprised of a single-compartment shaft inclined 70 degrees to a depth of 120 feet with levels at 50, 90 and 120 feet. A drift was driven 55 feet N in ore on the 50 foot level. A drift of 130 feet N in ore was driven on the 90 foot level, with a crosscut W to the ore body.
Production statistics: Year: 1942 (ore-accurate): ^38-40% Zn, some Pb, Au, Ag. Recovery percentage: Zn 39 wweight percent.
Year: 1949 (ore-accurate): ^40% Zn. Recovery percentage: Zn 40 weight percent.
Year: 1950 (oere-accurate): ^40% Zn. Recovery percentage: 40 weight percent.
The last shipment made in 1951, was of slightly higher grade ore.
Analytical data results: Zn - 38%, Pb - 1.1%, Fe - 4.2%, Ag - 10.3 ouncesw/ton, Au - traces, insolubles - 12.0%, lime - 12._% and H2O - 5.2%.
