Deposit: Location approximate, hatch locality f. Coal: zn 58-280 ppm, avg. 123 ppm; cd .12-1.1 ppm, avg. 0.36 ppm. Ash: zn 260-3,120 ppm, avg. 1,005 ppm, cd 1-12 ppm, avg. 3.0 ppm. Cadastral location: sec. 21, t. 73 n., r. 20 w. ; info.src : cobb the upper mississippi valley lead-zinc district includes thousands of small lead mines, perhaps 400 zinc mines, and some tens of mines producing copper, iron and barite. Most of the district is in wisconsin, a smaller part in illinois, and an even smaller part in iowa. The principal areas of mining in iowa are the guttenberg, north buena vista, sherrill mound, dubuque, and tete des morts subdistricts (heyl and others, 1959). Most sucessful exploration has been conducted in areas where the favorable carbonate host rocks outcrop. Undiscovered extensions of the district in iowa are likely west of the district, where the favorable carbonate rocks are covered by maquoqueta shale and younger rocks, and by the thick blanket of glacial debris. ; info.src : cobb
Geology: Sphalerite in cleats in coal; samples from the laddsdale coal of the cherokee group most of the ore deposits in the iowa part of the upper mississippi valley lead-zinc district are in the galena dolomite and in limestones and dolomite of the decorah and upper platteville formations of middle ordovician age. The ores are in (1) "gash vein" (crevice fillings) deposits, (2) "pitch and flat" deposits, and (3) residual and placer deposits. The ores are distinctive because of the lack of high temperature minerals, crystallization in open spaces (with limited amounts of disseminated and replacement ore), and are associated with folds, fractures, and joints. Collapse features are formed locally by solution-slump, and ores are locally found in solution breccias.
