Named after Nathanial (Nat) Cooke, being the first to discover alluvial gold here at Nullagine in 1886.
The location is one to two kilometres north north-west of the Nullagine town site. Many mines opened in this small area, initially alluvial surface workings, then prospector shows, until companies became involved in 1896 until about 1906, by which time the field was largely moribund.
Modern exploration and mining, has seen the area become a confusing array of roads and bulldozed areas, making the location of many old workings virtually impossible. The old workings were said to be east of Beaton's Hill. It is a jumble of hills, some named as Beaton's, Grant's, Dean, Cooke etc, and representing mines and gold areas.
Nat Cooke partnered with J.C. Greene after the gold discovery to work their reward claim. Green also at the time owned the Nor-West Mercantile Store at Roebourne. Both went on to be pioneers on several Pilbara goldfields, and Cooke the local pastoral industry as well.
The North West Australian Goldfields Limited had taken the lease, along with several others in the area, late 1896. The following year it is stated they had discovered good gold values at Cooke's Hill. The mine produced 348 tonnes of ore at 40 ounce to the tonne, and several small diamonds were also found in the battery boxes. When inspected in 1908, it was said the site had been abandoned for many years. Map approximate only.
