A former Hg mine located in sec. 22, T8S, R39E, MDM, 2.9 km (1.8 miles) N of Crater, and 4.3 km (2.7 miles) E of Last Chance Peak (coordinates of record) (prospects SW of Last Chance Spring), on National Park Service wilderness land (Death Valley National Park/Death Valley Wilderness). Originally mined by Native Americans. Owned by the Quad Metals Corp. (1969). Operated in 1968. MRDS database accuracy for this location is 10 meters.
NOTE: USGS MRDS database file #10103798 places this mine in sec. 2, T8S, R39E, MDM, at geographic coordinates 37°16'40"N, 117°39'46"W. There are no mining symbols on the topo maps for that location. The geographic coordinates provided in MRDS file #10187965 (sec. 22) relate to an area on the topo map with a shaft symbol and specified open pit mines, and several open mine symbols and access roads. It would appear that the data presented in file #10187965 are correct.
Mineralization is a deposit in an area of fossil hot springs along faults in Cambrian limestone and dolomite. Local rocks include Cambrian marine rocks.
Workings include unspecified surface and underground openings.
Produced a minimum of 1,000 flasks of Hg in 1968 plus 100 flasks in 1969. Closed in 1970.
