The Montrose chrome mine is located on the farm Hendriksplaats 281 KT about 15 km west of Burgersfort. Geologically the Steelpoort Layer of the Lower Critical Zone of the Bushveld Complex was exploited for chrome ore. This layer averages one metre in thickness with the ore producing 38-47 percent chrome oxide.
