One source states Kimberley prospectors Hall and Slattery late 1889 spent several months exploring the upper reaches of the Ashburton River. They returned to Roebourne, stating they had discovered gold over a wide area but nothing payable. Bill Ford, Campbell and Wilson then followed in the expedition's tracks, discovering Top Camp further upstream. It was the richest of the discoveries in the area. Bill ford met Arthur Bayley at Top Camp, and the pair later went onto discovering the fabulously rich Coolgardie.
Another source states the reward claim at Top Camp was awarded to Capner and O'Neil.
H.P. Page Woodward, Government Geologist late 1890 states there were sixty men on the field. Alluvial gold was being recovered from north-south flowing gullies across a 5 mile expanse. The hills were steep north-east dipping slate capped by dolomite. The larger nuggets were very pure, without ironstone or quartz, and flat bar shaped. He states this is because the gold slowly accumulated between the slate on ledges.
Most left in 1892 when the Murchison discoveries became public knowledge, and Top Camp was deserted by 1900. Its unlikely many have been there since.
