Local folklore states a miner who went by the name Jack the Soldier, or Soldier Tom (we are unsure why such a discrepancy), had discovered gold here. Upon telling a mate, he was overheard, and a rush set in.

Soldiers Secret is the most accessible of the sites, which generally are not accessible at all. Its relative and the location is still remote. A track bears south from the Ashburton Downs-Meekatharra Road, leaving just east of the creek that runs past the Beasley Pinnacles. This rough track heads about 20 kilometres to the diggings. There is no help within easy reach of this location.

Described as slate steep hills with gold found in the gullies between for 200-400 yards. An estimated 1500 ounces of gold had been found in the first few months of digging, which covered a 5 square kilometre area. The gold was much finer than at Top Camp. Gold was found as part of ironstone nodules, but very little quartz. The largest nugget found was one ounce.

Bonzle places Soldiers Creek North-East about one kilometre north-east of the Soldiers Secret gold mine. Marston states it contains malachite, chrysocolla, limonite, gold in quartz veinlets, along bedding, cleavage and fracture planes in phyllite. Explored by Anglo American in 1973, who stated there was anomalous zones 200-400 metres long and 30-40 metres wide.
