Toweranna is 20 kilometres south-east of Whim Creek. It borders the Mallina-Croyden Road, as a compact area of shafts and collapsed stopes, in a flat fairly desolate location.
The spot came to life in 1895, with several leases worked, until 1898 when it was largely deserted. What appeared to be caps of large reefs turned out to only be floaters.
The most substantial mines during this short period was the Yellow Aster GML 207 and Golden King. These had been promoted by Albert Calvert, an early enthusiast of Western Australian minerals, the mines purchased by the Universal Corporation of Western Australia. A 10 head battery was installed.
Other leases mentioned at the time in passing were St Clements Edith, Castle, Day Dawn GML 87, Toweranna Queen GML 271, and Toweranna itself GML 204. By 1908, the field had produced 194.80 tonnes of ore for 2088.26 ounces of gold.
In 1915, H.T. Brown took over the old Universal leases, calling it the Lone Hand. The prior company had over capitalised and abandoned the field. Brown found much gold remained in the workings.
