Trans Gold Mine
The Trans Gold Mine is approximately 60 kilometres south-east of Kalgoorlie, and 500 metres north of the Trans Australian Railway Line. It is an abandoned modern open pit, with a far smaller pit over a ridge to the north-west.
The site was discovered in 1921, and soon there was an alluvial rush with sixty men looking for nuggets. At the south end was a shallow lead, heading west. A 9 ounce slug was found by Finch and Keogh, the largest found in the initial period. It was stated most of the men had found a little gold. A later report states many small nuggets found from grains to 2 ounces, in a one square mile area. Very little gold was being recovered by dryblowing.
The lode trended north-south, and was being sunk on by Thomas and Woulfe, their short lived lease named the Triangle. The shaft had reached a depth of 16 feet, on an oxidised lode 5 feet wide with quartz veins. The adjacent lease was owned by Cutbush and Sheridan (all surnames), on the same lode, with a shaft 8 feet deep on the lode 5 feet wide. In 1922, the area was controlled by a syndicate of Kalgoorlie businessmen.
The north-south trending reef was in schist containing fine gold, with schist one wall, and gneiss the other. Parallel lodes existed to the west and east.
By late 1922, it all appeared largely over.
