Isonomy is a legal term meaning all citizens of a state have equal rights. It is more likely the mine was named after a British racehorse which won ten races from fourteen starts between 1877 to 1880.

The Isonomy Gold Mine is in the Sudden Jerk area, about 8 kilometres north north-west of the Mount Monger pastoral station homestead. Isonomy was developed by Cole and party in 1895, along with neighbouring King George mine.

They sold the mine for a pittance not realising its true value. They tried to cancel the deal at the last minute upon realising they had a valuable mine, but it was too late. The mine was sold to a syndicate headed by well known mining identity A.E. Morgans. The syndicate in turn was financed by European barons the Rothschilds. They dabbled in a couple of other Western Australian mines at the time, then realised it was a gamble they were not willing to take.

German geologist Herr Schmeisser was sent to investigate. The lode forms a closely packed set of boulders ranging from the size of an orange to rocks weighing 3 cwt. The matrix the boulders sit in contains very little gold, but when the boulders are split they have gold right through them. It is an unusual lode formation for Western Australia.

A shaft had been sunk to 100 feet. Schmeisser sent a sackful of specimens back to Europe, which was distributed amongst German museums. While the source states these come from Isonomy, Schmeisser visited several gold mines on his visit to Western Australia, and some may come from other locations. It is hoped the specimens still exist, and have not been melted down, during the various upheavals Europe experienced during the 20th Century.

Like many small gold mines in Western Australia, after the initial burst of information about how rich the deposit is, nothing more is heard. This probably indicates it was a small rich near surface deposit, mined out in a short space of time.
