This historic mine is thought to have been somewhere near the modern Lorna Doone open pit. The company was formed during the gold boom on the field in 1920.
Reid and Pilkington (surnames) had originally pegged the lease in 1920, during a rush of pegging after McCahon discovered the Great Hope deposit. A company was floated in Adelaide called the Mount Monger Proprietary, with the original prospectors getting 10 700 pounds in cash, and 15 000 fully paid shares.
The promoters were Jason Cummins and E.W. Stearne who also got a substantial windfall. A 10 head battery, condensing plant, cyanide plant and other machinery was erected. George Hunt is mine manager. 24 acres.
The company complained about the less than enthusiastic report by Assistant State Engineer T. Blatchford about the goldfield, and the Proprietary mine in particular. They demanded a government geologist re-visit and produce another report. Government geologists were independent, and often had to try and interpret the geology from limited workings at these mines. Of course the company was not independent.
The Mines Minister Scaddan wisely suggested investors insist a qualified mining engineer investigate a deposit before a prospectus is issued. This was not normal practice at the time. Modern prospectuses in Australia do now include an 'independent geologist's report' from a private company employed for the purpose. The writer is yet to read one of these which condemns the deposits the companies plan to invest in.
The company did much development work, and some small amounts of crushing, before the mortgagee took possession of the mine early in 1923. Shortly after only four shareholders bothered to turn up to the final company meeting, and they all agreed a liquidator should be appointed, and the company wound up. The liquidator decided to continue development of the mine, with the deeper levels un-watered. It limped along for about another year before being abandoned.
The Mindat co-ordinates are approximate, and mark the abandoned Lorna Doone open pit, in the immediate area of the historic mine.
