The Bulong Goldfield contained extensive alluvial gold when discovered in 1893, and led to a huge rush. Nuggets continue to be discovered until recent times. The Slug Hill area is described as about half a kilometre east of the Queen Margaret mine. It is probably an extensive 2 kilometre north-west to south-east line of old shafts and shallow workings, following a narrow flat, that can be seen east of the mine. A slug in this case is a large rounded gold nugget.
The Slug Hill Proprietary Company held a lease here from 1894, but in 1899 decided to evict the alluvial miners from its lease, despite ceasing activity at the mine from 1898. It was accepted at the time alluvial miners could work the near surface, while the companies could mine from reef gold lower down on the same lease. This was overturned in the warden's court. After a protest meeting and funds raised to fight the case in the Supreme Court, the company backed down.
Other mines at the location were the short lived Slug Hill Junction, Slug Hill North Extended, and Slug Hill Consols, amongst others.
In 1900, the Slug Hill Gold Mining Company put through a few crushings from an alluvial leader. Late 1900, it stated crushing values were poor and by May the following year it was applying for exemptions.
