John West contains several narrow sinuous pits typical of palaeochannel gold deposits in Western Australia. It is located in the far north-west portion of the Mount Pleasant complex. It has a relatively small resource compared to other similar mines in the area of 20 000 tonnes at 7.87 g/t. Its noted fish baron John West started after he emigrated from Scotland on the Californian goldfields in the early 1800's, but whether the mine is named after him is open to speculation.
