Four in Hand was floated by the Ramage Syndicate, covering leases totalling 90 acres just west of the Black Flag township. In Oct 1895, the Black Flag Consolidated Gold Mines Ltd was formed with 140 000 pounds capital (of which 30 000 pounds was working capital) to develop the Four in Hand lease (12 acres) and Four in Hand Extended (24 acres), and another 15 acres for the battery, but which had four reefs in it as well. The company was then reconstructed as the New Flag Gold Mining Company in October 1897 in London with 150 000 pounds raised.
The lease was on a north-south trending quartz blow. Early development was retarded by the water level being at 30 feet below the surface, and several shafts were sunk to that depth. This restricted development to near surface, and the mine began digging costeans, eventually totalling 20 miles in length. Parallel lines of costeans were dug in all directions, never more than a depth of 14 feet, and little gold was found. The authorities demanded they be filled in, and the company complied to a degree covering over half.
Activities reverted back to the main reef, and a shaft was sunk to 330 feet, but so far west of the lode it was of little benefit. Joseph Wyatt was mine manager at this time. A 10 head battery was erected in May 1896, but was located 500 metres from the main workings.
No workings could be seen at the map site, although there are two modern abandoned water filled pits, 500 metres to the south-east called Golden Funnel and Golden Funnel North. Map location on Mindat is approximate.
