The site was originally a small alluvial rush in about 1895. F.L. Finch discovered a rich reef on a small hill overlooking the original workings. He secured an area of 60 acres, incorporating the Queen of Bertha, Black Flag Hero, Black Flag Junction, Cockburn King and Welcome Home leases. These he controlled until June 7 1896. Finch had rejected several offers of up to 10 000 pounds for the leases, and appears to have had to forfeit the leases due to not complying with labour conditions. A syndicate worked the leases for six months.
In March 1897, the Adelaide based Black Flag Junction Gold Mining Company was formed to take over the leases. Finch was employed as mine manager. 40 000 pounds capital had been raised. The company took over 24 acres of the leases.
The main reef trends north-east to south-west, 3 feet wide, with a parallel reef to the south, and further south an ironstone formation showing gold in quartz leaders. Eight shafts were on the property but only to shallow depths due to the inflow of water. October 1897 Finch found stone richly impregnated with gold in the No 2 shaft at the 35 foot level. Shortly after he resigned, and Charles Eichled took over as mine manager.
August 1898, the company made a call on shareholders for more money, but with little forthcoming the mine soon closed. Sources state nearby mines were called Windemere and Here's Luck.
The site is about 4 kilometres east of the Lady Bountiful mine in the Mount Pleasant complex. The site appears little more than a minor line of shafts, about 100 metres north of the Broad Arrow to Mount Pleasant road.
