Half Mile Reef is approximately 7 kilometres south-west of Bardoc. A rough eroded track runs virtually in a straight line from Bardoc south west to the site, which consists of a dam, remnant battery sands immediately north, and a group of shafts a little distance further north. At the mine the track turns south-east and many shafts exist on a line parallel and a little west of the track for a couple of kilometres.

The mine was developed by the Half Mile Reef Gold Mining Company.
R.B. Gleisburg is general manager. Information was found from 1897 when a 10 head battery was erected. The source goes into great detail of the machinery at the mine, the food and guests at the opening ceremony. The battery was inoperational largely for the first 18 months due to a lack of water. Other problems included low ore grades at depth, the refractory nature of the ore containing large amounts of copper making cyaniding impossible.

Despite this the mine produced a substantial 23 480 tonnes of ore for 13 046 ounces of gold, mainly between 1898 to 1903. In 1904, an independent party was trying to treat the sands. A bar of 'gold' was presented to the local bank as evidence of their hard work. 2100 pounds was handed over. However, when the bar was assayed, it contained only 11 ounces of gold and 589 ounces of copper. 30 000 tonnes of sands remained at the site at this time awaiting advances of technology to treat it.

The mine was sold to Silverthorne (surname) in 1905 for 1400 pounds.
