Historic lease, now part of the Gimlet South open pit, 500 metres south of Ora Banda. The lease was adjacent to the Victorious on its west side in one source, or north of the Slippery Gimlet lease in another. Conflicting information was found at points for this lease.
The lease was originally taken out by Jack Borland and Rudd, around 1906, who obtained some rich specimens and crushed ore at the Siberia battery. Initially 300 tonnes was crushed for 300 ounces.
They sold the lease to Leschendall (this spelling may not be correct)for 1000 pounds, who put on a mine manager and miners, and also sent several crushings to the Siberia battery. After considerable development he tried to float a company in Sydney to take over the lease, which failed and he abandoned the lease. Hughes and Heron then sent 100 tonnes of ore to Kalgoorlie at 11 dwt per tonne, but no more is known.
O.A. Archibald and party make a rich find in 1911 at the 120 feet level. However, another source in 1911 states the Ted Archibald syndicate first named the lease, (it is assumed about 1906) showing poor values initially, but the ore improved over time. The shaft was down to 120 feet on an 8 foot wide lode it states.
The lode averaged 6 foot wide and had been developed down to 115 feet below the surface. It was said the mine was on its own line of lode or reef compared to neighbouring mines. Crushings were found to 1914, when the Adelaide Westralia syndicate turned down purchasing the lease.
In 1917, it is reported the mine had been idle for some years, but had just been re-started by Campie and Tom Allan as an 18 acres prospecting area. They explored the workings at the 80 and 100 foot levels, trying to find the continuation of the rich shoots of the early days. Shortly after they had shifted their attention to the old Sterling West mine also on the Gimlet lode.
The Mindat co-ordinates are approximate, and mark the large abandoned Gimlet South open pit which swallowed the historic workings.
