The Lady Montefiore Gold Mine is a historic lease from the late 1890's in the vicinity of the two abandoned Caledonia open pits, about 200 metres north-east of the railway fetter's cottages on the highway.
The Lady Montefiore Company was floated in London in 1895, raising 150 000 pounds capital to acquire the leases from the West Australian Minerals and Finance Company. Much of the money went to line the pockets of the directors and promoters, and wanton extravagance with building works at the mine.
The company was reconstructed in 1898, and name was changed to Goongarrie United Gold Mines, with a further capital raised from gullible investors of 200 000 pounds. Only 11 000 pounds of this reached the mine as working capital. Several shafts were sunk to 140 feet. In 1900, a diamond drill was used to explore at depth, but nothing payable was found. 700 ounces was won during this period, and a mine manager was left with two years of wages owing to him.
