Named after the original prospector who pegged the lease shortly after gold was discovered here in 1893. The mine was in the vicinity of the present two abandoned Caledonia open pits, about 200 metres north-east of the railway fetter's cottages on the highway.
29 acres. Hicks obtained a large quantity of gold from a leader. Ex M.L.A. Fred Monger then floated the mine in London in 1896, with 130 000 pounds capital raised, of which Hicks and party got 13 000 pounds, and a large portion of shares.
Shortly after a neighbouring lease of 6 acres was secured for 800 pounds. A 10 head battery was erected in 1897. 900 ounces of gold was won. Mining was suspended at the end of 1897 for lack of capital, indicating much money had been wasted, or lined the pockets of directors and promoters. The company was wound up in 1898, reconstructed, and more money raised from gullible investors, then the company went into liquidation again in 1899.
The mine passed into the hands of Phoenix Mines Limited who did nothing with it, apart from removing the battery.
The Mindat co-ordinates are approximate.
