Caledonia is two water filled shallow open pits, developed by Julia Mines Ltd in 1989. The pits are 200 metres north-east of the signposted railway fetter's cottages on the Goldfields Highway. Cyclonic flooding caused Julia Mine to abandon its four open pits in the area and remove the CIP plant.
The original lease, was developed over an alluvial patch, including the discovery of a 24 ounce nugget. By 1895 the shaft was down to 66 feet, on a north-west to south-east trending reef, 18 inches wide on the surface, and 5 feet at the bottom of the workings. Rich gold was found on the 54 foot level.
J. McDowell managed the mine for a syndicate of Perth politicians and businessmen. By 1899, the mine was under the ownership of George Roberts and sons. They removed a 10 head battery from the Bayley's United Gold Mine near Coolgardie, and re-erected it at the Caledonia. This was in addition to the 20 heads already on the lease. It appears to have been a gross over capitalisation considering the lease to the 1920's had only produced 263 tonnes of ore for 442 ounces.
