In 1899, Thomas Davys (after whom Davyhurst is named), Patrick Glenny, Charles Mace and his young son Miller Mace, discovered the Waihi deposit, just north-west of the former townsite of Davyhurst. They pegged the Waihi, and Melrose immediately to the south. The historic workings would have been destroyed by the southern most Waihi pit, developed during modern times.

David Matchett, Holman and his wife acquired the mine in 1900.

In 1905, Herman Mandelstamm took an option over the mine for 15 000 shares and no cash to Matchett. Mandelstamm tried to float a company in Adelaide without success. Mitchell who had been representing Mandelstamm decided to try his luck at mining the deposit himself. He uncovered a small quartz leader in a wheel rut after rain and followed it down with some success. He obtained 900 ounces from 300 tonnes of ore in twelve months.

Billy Collins, former manager of the Waihi Mine, employed some miners and started development work. However he was unable to get much as far as wages for his men, even travelling to Perth to round up Mandelstamm. Frustrated he left the mine. In the end two men were employed to hold 27 acres, and Matchett held his breathe no-body would try and seek forfeiture of the lease.

In a time when women were considered good at only washing dishes and ironing, Mrs Holman, was a capable force. She travelled to London in 1909 to seek capital for the mine, and is said she was held in high regard in the city as a mining expert. The problem was each wanted to run the mine and be boss. Something had to give, and later in 1909, the Holmans sold out to Matchett for 500 pounds. Holman retired to Esperance.

After a decade of mining the small rich reef, Matchett was now the richest man at Davyhurst, having made about 7000 pounds worth from the property. Matchett retired to a farm near Perth.

He sold the mine soon after to a Mrs Murray and J. Finlay for 500 pounds, and they are noted as owners in 1913. They uncovered 1500 pounds worth of gold within twelve months.
